Summary of how well I got on with the first two areas we've covered in the database preparation for the January 2011 database exam

I coped well with the entity - relationships diagrams and understand the theory behind link tables/ foreign keys/ one to many cros feet etc. I would say that I need to practice to make sure I get everything right and not add unnecessary link tables etc

It is straightforward to import data into access and set up the relationships. It is also a straightforward process to forget some of the steps which I did today. I need to practice getting everything right first time so I don't have to recreate tables and also need to practice at getting that process down to as short as possible.

Strategy for tackling various scenarios in the exam.

1. I'll check for any restrictions or requirements in the question.

2. I'll put the given numbers in my spreadsheet.

3. I'll collect a map to plan my routes for the buses, looking out for groups of destinations one bus could visit.

4. I'll put my initial solution to the test to see how it works out.

5. I'll try to arrive back at Crawley as close to 12:00 as possible so the players and driver don't have to get up at anti-social times.

6. I'll then look at pickup times, review the route and how many buses I am using to make the pickup times as late as possible or use up less petrol with less buses.

7. Test the new solution to see whether it is an improvement on my last.

8. If I'm not satisfied, I'll probably keep repeating the last two steps until I am.

User Persona

A typical user would be someone who is not very gothy or punky, reasonably young, some middle aged men at oldest. The odd bald person but nobody as old as a granddad. They aren't a really posh or high class person, middle class I think and they like watching sports like football. You wouldn't expect many university or college students to be shopping online at this site, most will be off to topman/shop or places like that.

NNG Task

'It is sad to report this, but a 56% success rate is actually one of the better outcomes ever seen in a major usability study of the Web.'. This is appalling and I agree this is very sad. It shows how important it is to have a website with good usability as it gives you a great chance of jumping above the remaining 44% of websites in terms of sales.

'Let us furthermore assume that Site A is 10% easier to shop at than Site B. If a person finds both sites in a search engine, then where will that person end up buying? Site A will probably win in many more than 10% of the cases. Further, let’s say that some shoppers make an initial purchase from both sites. Where will these customers turn for their next purchase? People will be more likely to choose Site A because it is easier to use. Quite likely, Site A could sell 100% more than Site B, even though it was only 10% easier to use.' I agree with this because I personally don't want alot of hassle and frustration when buying online. If there is an easier choice out there, I will take it and so will many others I'm sure.

First few weeks in IC and T

September 21, 2009 by Chris   Comments (0)

I have found IC and T a challenge so far this year. It is alot different to my qualification (that Top Valley never published the result for!) at GCSE level, which was all coursework printed out and handed in. There is very little time to complete the kind of assignment I was given 6 months for at GCSE level. The multimedia webpage is all new, and a big challenge. I feel that perhaps I write too much as a result of my OCR course where I did 60-80 pages an assignment and perhaps I need to look at writing less to complete the assignment on time. I'm going to get an A**.
